1. Christchurch – Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and for those who don’t start your journey in Auckland then you’re likely to land here. It’s a beautiful and friendly city, as you walk around the streets you’ll be amazed how peaceful the city is. Christchurch is known as the “Garden City” because of it’s natural and photogenic beauty. One place that should be visited is the Botanical Gardens which was founded in 1863. There are lots of activities and attractions available here including museums and a thriving art and cultural scene.
2. Kaikoura – Kaikoura is a town on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 1 180 km north of Christchurch. Kaikoura is a special place of lush pastures and towering, snow covered peaks that fall to the sea. This rare magic continues just offshore where a deep undersea canyon combines with unusual sea currents to attract an extraordinary abundance of marine life, the most famous being the Sperm Whale.
3. Nelson – The city of Nelson is close to the geographical centre of New Zealand. It lies on the southern shore of Tasman Bay, at the northern end of the South Island. It’s a creative paradise, arty and interesting, it’s surrounded by beautiful landscapes and a thriving creative local culture. Nelson main attraction’s include Motueka, Takaka, Abel Tasman National Park, Brightwater, Golden Bay, Kaiteriteri and Murchison.
4. Queenstown – Queenstown is a great destination for international visitors. It has a natural beauty with a beautiful lake and snow clad mountains which tower above the township in winter. Queenstown is a great place to visit all year round. Located beside the pretty Lake Wakatipu, in the Southern Lakes district of New Zealand, Queenstown is a cosmopolitan haven, offering plenty of adventure, fine wine and cuisine, and breathtaking alpine scenery.
5. Dunedin – Dunedin is the second largest city in the South Island, it’s a University town and is classed as one of New Zealand’s main cities. Dunedin has been built on hills and valleys which was once a volcano. It’s a laid back place with some great scenery and attractions. Try taking the old steam train over Taieri Gorge – it takes around half a day and for those who have the budget you can have lunch on the train. The journey is very interesting and it feels very authentic – an altogether charming experience.
