Experience Giant Adventures In Tiny Port O’Connor
As far as towns go, Port O’Connor just about qualifies. It’s a tiny, unincorporated community of approximately 1200 inhabitants located on the Gulf shores of Texas nearly directly between Corpus Christi and Galveston. Its so extremely small that the mail system is nonexistent, forcing residents to have things sent via General Delivery to the central post office.
Perhaps being minuscule is what makes Port O’Connor (locally denoted “POC”) refreshing to visit by tourists seeking beach rental accommodations for one or two relaxing weeks. Vacation retreats in Port O’Connor are located in arguably the best-kept secret in Texas; a perfect combination of luxuriousness in the form of Port O’Connor beachfront accommodation or secluded Port O’Connor casual romantic getaways, relaxation along with several sea recreations are at your disposal within this quaint location by the sea.
Port O’Connor is a perfect platform to launch excursions in several types of nature-based and sporting activities. The offshore waters are rich in schools of redfish, black drim and flounder; simply meander down to the beaches or local fishing pier and cast a line. Anglers who prefer the big catch to be seized out in the open sea will find that local Pass Cavallo offers easy entrance into the Gulf of Mexico; the shores around Espiritu Santo and Matagorda Bay are home to great numbers of marlin, tarpon, kingfish and snapper. There also exists excellent duck hunting in season and even deer hunting on closely situated Padre Island.
For those partial to shooting birds with a camera rather than a gun they’ll be exceptionally happy once they explore POC. It is located along one of the most critical migration paths taken by approximately 300 varying types of birds. The Matagorda Island Nature Preserve is barely a small boat ride away. Other nearby nature preserves and protected areas include the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and Goose Island State Park. Camping and angling are available at the latter, along with guided nature hikes all year long.
This area offers a variety of other water sports also, such as sailing, kayaking, swimming and even surfing; in fact, an uncommonly known detail concerning the Texas Gulf Coast is that the surfing compares quite favorably with beaches in Southern California and South Florida.
In the midst of exploring Port O’Connor, a few spots that one should not miss include the Calhoun County Museum, which recounts the ancestry of the area from the time of the first human habitation; the USS Lexington, the oldest surviving and longest-serving aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy; RIverside Park, a country area straddling four miles of the Guadalupe River; and the Texas State Aquarium, one of the premier educational establishments in the region.
Finally, visit the local Victoria Mall for excellent shopping and enjoy a first-run film at the Twin Dolphin Theater over in Port Lavaca.
POC may be small in population and area, but for interested visitors, it boasts a big package of leisurely opportunities.
