The Virgin Islands are located in the northwest corner of the Caribbean Sea and offer the best sailing in the world. Warm water, beautiful beaches, lots of sunshine and constant trade-winds make this area a sailors dream. For the vacationing visitor who may want to go sailing for the day there are numerous companies that offer these types of sailing adventures.

Not every day-sailing company offers the same type of excursions. Some differ in their location, some in the size of their boat, some in the amount of passengers they carry plus there can be differences in the price of a ticket. Two other important questions to think about is, do they serve lunch and if so what will it consist of, and what is their “alcohol” policy? A few drinks while sailing can be fun but a drunken “booze cruise” will be a nightmare.

Trip Advisor is a great place to look up your day-sailing choice and get a little insight into the demeanor of your captain and crew. I have heard just about every story you can think of regarding captains and how they relate to the guests they have sailing with them for the day. Most captains love taking people sailing and love sharing their knowledge along the way. Some will even let you grab the wheel and sail the yacht yourself(now talk about fun). Some captains (male and female) may find a love sick passenger by the end of the day, and unfortunately some captains tend to forget that their paying guests have picked them from many different day-sailing companies and they can be rude, impatient, insensitive and not much fun to spend a day with. Fortunately, this last category of sailing captain does not make long in this business, but it is worth doing a little homework on your part before you book your reservation to see who you will be spending your day with.

Before you book your day-sailing adventure do a little homework, make a few phone calls, check out different websites, and then make your decision. One thing for certain is that sailing a yacht in the Caribbean is about as much fun as a group of friends can have. Depending on what you have in mind you will be able to find a company that caters to your desires. Do you want a laid back day of sailing, beach exploring, leisurely hikes and sampling of fine cuisine, or maybe you prefer an exciting full day of sailing, rail down, as your yacht races through the blue Caribbean Sea. You can have it all on a Virgin Islands day-sail.

I must admit to you that after my first sailing adventure in the Caribbean my life was never the same. It is very hard to go back to the “real” world when you know the tradewinds are blowing. My wife and I now spend six months out of each year in the Virgin Islands, living and sailing and loving the “good life”.
